Privacy Settings
In WordPress you have to select SITE VISIBILITY :- you have to select 1st line that says
" I would like my site to be visible to everyone, including search engines (like Google, Bing, Technorati) and archivers"
So that your site INDEX in search engines. Without that search engine cant find your website. So ..if you want to visible your website in Search Engines you need to select that option that shows below.
Permalink Settings:
WordPress uses its own by default URL Structure which includes questions marks and numbers.It looks like this
http://website.com/?p=123
http://website.com/2012/11/27/sample-post/
http://website.com/2012/11/sample-post/
http://website.com/archives/123
WordPress also provide you to create custom URL structure, so you can Optimize URL for Search Engine Optimization and also improve Usability.
For that u have select CUSTOM STRUCTURE just add following structure in text field: /%postname%
